I have a friends baby shower coming up next month & I want to get her useful things but at the same time unique. I’ve checked Pottery Barn & such…anyone have other good websites to check out? I’m planning on doing a basket with misc. baby goods (soaps, diapers, bottles, etc…) but also want to throw in some nicer things. Any suggestions for something nice for new mom. Spa certificates etc. are out- she’s just not into that stuff. Thanks for your help!!

Diapers!
All I have ever wanted was diapers.
It wasn’t a baby shower gift but the thing I found most useful was my wonderful mother coming over twice a week to clean the house and do the laundry so I could spend time bonding with my new baby. Could you pay for somebody to come in and give her a hand with stuff like that for the first couple of weeks to give her a chance to find her feet and not worry about domestic stuff? Another thing I would have loved is to have all the cooking for my husband and I done, there are places that will deliver a weeks worth of food to your home, that sort of thing would take a load off her too.
Depends on your price range and the season, but- I LOVE our Baby Bjorn! I was able to do dishes or fold laundry while my newborn slept cozily under my chin, and now she enjoys facing out and looking all around while I put on makeup or go out to get the mail. Another useful thing was a cover for the car seat for winter- I picked one up on Amazon for under $20. I use only unscented items, the scented stuff can be too much for a newborn’s skin. Some ‘free and clear’ detergent or baby detergent would be nice to add- especially since many moms wash the baby stuff before using it.
I second gift cards to restaurants. I had a certificate to Olive Garden and it was wonderful. I would just have my husband run by on the way home from work and bring it for dinner. My most used items have been various baby carriers such as a moby wrap and a hotsling. They were life savers especially during the first 3 months.
The most useful thing I got at my sons baby shower was a bassinet and a glider chair but if you don’t want to go big then just little things like maybe a medicine kit or clothes and the most useful thing I got at my daughters was a set of wicker baskets that had misc. stuff in them like clothes, diapers, shampoo ETC,My hubby’s Grandma got them for us they are kind of like this they have cheaper ones I’m sure, they came in really handy for us because we were limited on space:http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d…
a lot of people buy diapers, but you use wipes just as much. throw some of those in
as for the mom, a hair cut might be suitable, i know i sure wanted one after having a newborn
gift certificates to her favorite clothing store, or clothing if you know what size she will wear
a digital camera memory card or something of that nature
a gift certificate for a portrait studio would be excellent
The best thing for a newborn is a baby wrap carrier. It’s a little intimidating looking but its easy to figure out and it kept my daughter asleep for hours at a time for the first couple months. A lifesaver!http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp…
If she has a noisy house a sound machine is also great. And one of those mirrors that attaches to the back seat headrest so the mom can see the baby in the rear view mirror (since the baby is riding facing backwards you can’t see them otherwise).
Another great idea is a sleep sack with a removable swaddler. You cant put blankets in the crib with a baby so this keeps the baby warm and swaddled and then when they dont want to be swaddled anymore the swaddle part comes off and its just a SIDS safe sleep sack. They sell them at BabiesRus but just not online. http://store.babycenter.com/product/code…
Diapers, but make sure you get a bigger size. I ended up having to give away my newborn sizes. Get her a size two or three.
As far as a really nice thing I received; I received a small silver and white ceramic figure of a mommy and daddy cradling their baby. I really love it.
I got the neatest little things at my baby shower that I find will come real handy at bathtime. They make these little towel things you wet with warm water and they drape over the baby to keep them warm during bath times! Bath Luve is what they are called. Here’s a link:http://www.bathluve.com/ourproduct.html
Here are two things that I actually bought myself after my shower & I will definitely give these in the future. I have found both to be extremely useful. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp…http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp…
I would throw in a gift card to a restaurant. After she has the baby, she can get take-out or go out to eat….she will probably be too tired to cook. LOL!
Other gifts I really liked were cute photo albums, my baby swing, and soft / cute onesies.
Good luck!
diapers, bottles are some of the most useful things, how about a gift card for pizza or something like that? sometime with a new baby you do want to cook nor have time.
My aunt bought me a bunch of paper plates and cups and things. I know it sounds weird but after about 3 weeks I did not much care to wash dishes and it really helped me out.
some nice PJ’s, a bottle of wine (or whatever she likes 2 drink), nice smelling candles, a food gift card, or one 2 her fave restaurant for her & daddy…
clothing larger than newborn i had a fried who got me two out fits in every size from newborn to one year nothing fancy but it did really help you don’t realize how fast they out grow stuff
a baby swing is very useful…you could get the mom any gift certificates(like target walmart..ect.)
for me… the diapers because you use soooo many when the baby is born plus… they gave me one big box that was size 1-2
boppy pillow
baby flannels ( you need heaps of them) a baby bag – with changing mat inside
We got a bouncy seat and my son loves it. He could sit in it for hours.
burp cloths
